Uma equipe do Observatório Nacional registrou a maior tempestade geomagnética deste ciclo solar. De acordo com os pesquisadores, os efeitos do acontecimento podem interferir em fenômenos como a aurora boreal e os sistemas de comunicações via satélite.
O fenômeno causado pela interação de grandes quantidades de partículas solares com o campo magnético da Terra aconteceu entre os dias 24 e 25 de março. Os dados foram registrados por um conjunto de 19 aparelhos geofísicos magnetotelúricos instalados no Rio de Janeiro e no Espírito Santo.
Utilizado para fazer as detecções, o método magnetotelúrico é uma técnica de estudo que usa a variação temporal do campo magnético da Terra para determinar a resistividade (capacidade de conduzir eletricidade) das rochas da superfície solar.
Com ele, os pesquisadores conseguiram registrar a maior tempestade geomagnética deste ciclo, período de 11 anos que é encerrado pelas mudanças do número de manchas na superfície solar.
A tempestade solar foi classificada como intensa/forte, com distúrbios no campo magnético de aproximadamente -200 nT. Ainda, o National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) classificou a tempestade como de nível G3, também considerado forte.
