Aos 60 anos, Lionel Elika Fatupaito, técnico da equipe de boxe de Samoa, faleceu após sofrer uma parada cardíaca neste sábado, 27 de julho, na Vila Olímpica em Paris. A confirmação do falecimento foi feita pelo Ministério Público da Comuna de Bobigny, na França.
“Nós, da International Boxing Association (IBA), estendemos nossas sinceras condolências à família, amigos e colegas de Lionel Elika Fatupaito, o treinador nacional de boxe de Samoa, que faleceu tragicamente durante o Paris 2024”, escreveu a Federação Internacional de Boxe (IBA) em comunicado.
“A dedicação e a paixão de Lionel pelo esporte deixaram uma marca indelével na comunidade do boxe. Seu legado continuará a inspirar as gerações futuras. Nossos pensamentos e orações estão com a equipe de Samoa e todos aqueles afetados por esta perda profunda”, finalizou a federação.
O ataque cardíaco ocorreu por volta das 10h20 no horário local (5h20 no Brasil), quando o treinador estava no quarto, acompanhado de um atleta. Apesar do atendimento imediato pelos serviços de emergência, Lionel Elika Fatupaito não resistiu e faleceu no local.
