A Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS) confirmou a primeira morte pela variante H5N2 da gripe aviária. O paciente, de 59 anos, vivia no México.
Este foi o primeiro caso de infecção em humano confirmado em laboratório em todo o mundo. A morte foi reportada por autoridades sanitárias mexicanas no dia 23 de maio.
Em nota, a OMS destacou que o paciente, morador da Cidade do México, não tinha histórico de exposição a aves ou outros animais. A variante H5N2 já havia sido identificada em aves do país.
“O paciente tinha múltiplas condições médicas subjacentes. Os familiares relataram que ele já estava acamado há três semanas, por outros motivos, antes do início do sintomas agudos”, destacou a organização.
Com base nas informações disponíveis até o momento, a OMS avalia como baixo o risco representado pelo vírus para a população em geral.
